Ancestral Veneration 

I have decided that there must be reconciliation for the current concept of the individual regarding the death of the many parts of himself in this life. I believe in reincarnation in regards to parts of the soul which need it, and that this happens on a microcosmic scale while we are living. After all, the Invokation of the “Bornless” (Head-less) One before the evokation of the Goetia is a bringing forth of the archetype of the “be-headed” King and Queen in the Chymical Wedding, of the myth of Osiris, etc. This is an archetype of the Higher Self, the HGA which commands the “dead” parts of us (shells of the personal unconscious, spirits of the Goetia) to rise and be guided under Will. There appears a literal connection to these ideas and that of the old depictions of Atu XX; the dead rising from their tombs and are given eternal life.

I’ve looked forward so much that I seem to have forgotten how I got here. There is an undeniable aspect of energy in ancestral workings (harnessed primarily for thaumaturgical purposes) but albeit powerful and has been dominant throughout the centuries.

To the theurgist, although all parts of the self end up in Sheol, they are either resurrected for the purposes of the Great Work, or abide as Qliphotic aspects of self which must continue to be rectified–both for our sake, and “theirs.” It is interesting that by understanding the microcosm in this manner, we understand that these aspects of our self contain in themselves a type of base consciousness; a persistence to exist and stubborness to attempt to avoid change or the death of itself.

This is essentially what our individual manifestations are to the macrocosm.

The aspects of self which are “righteous” i.e. in alignment with the True Will of the Individual, having been resurrected, can be interpreted to be living in Heaven/the Supernals/in Harmony with the All.

When we venerate our ancestors, we are acknowledging the continuation of the cycle and drawing forth all the energy of the transformations they’ve made throughout time, feeling the energy of the All propelling us forth into the Light. Therefore any progress made in the present is never ours, nor our ancestors, but the permutation of the One. 

The Unconscious Mind

THE UNCONSCIOUS MIND.

 

In my essay regarding the Drive of Self, I concluded – “the True Will of every man is ultimately to unite his consciousness with his own unconscious mind.” Here, I will aim to elaborate on the nature of the unconscious mind/personal unconscious and what this means in relation to the central tenets of Thelema. This essay will first begin with linear diagrams and a theory to how a singular individual’s unconscious mind functions in relation to his subconscious and consciousness, and show this model mirrored in the macrocosm’s collective unconscious, that which we call “reality,” and the present moment.

The conscious mind/consciousness of the individual is, more or less, synchronized with the present moment. Our attention functions as a mirror reflecting the mind/microcosm and the universe/macrocosm. Nothing can be revealed to itself without opposition – without the context of either side, the self/ego cannot exist. By definition, the ego is the result of the separation of heaven and earth. Its utility lies in its ability to balance and affect both parts.

 
The unconscious mind/collective unconscious informs and creates the subconscious and reality, from which consciousness can alter the subconscious/reality by taking (or if you prefer, “remembering”) directly from the unconscious/collective unconscious. The subconscious tends to perform its tasks quickly, hence the appearance of time passing quickly when one is overcome with emotion, or letting the mind wander freely. Reality being both the seen and unseen patterns, memes, and sensory data appears to move quite slowly; the sun passing overhead, the seasons changing, the economy pulling itself above water, and so on. Hence the ego’s usual offense and seeking to influence the world we see, to speed it up, avoid boredom, and satisfy the subconscious mind. Even when we mean well, there are unforseen consequences because our conscious sight is so narrow.

 
Hence, the advice to keep one’s ego in check in order to do one’s True Will relies upon learning to expand one’s sight (seeing in LVX) to encompass rays from the unconscious mind (mirrored/mirroring the collective unconscious), the source of True Will.

 
The unconscious mind is comprised of three parts which influence each other. The first, Self – is awareness of these processes. The second, Imagination – is the reformation of ideas. The third, Symbolism – is the ideas themselves and the formation of them.

 
The nature of the collective unconscious is as follows; the first – Self defined through Law [LOVE]. The second – [LAW], being the ethics of the language. The third – language, to express the Law [WILL].

The collective unconscious of the macrocosm:

 

  1. LOVE – Self defined through Law: awareness and equal appreciation of all things, the unity subject and object.
  2. LAW – the ethics of language: “ethics” here refer to the principles of the universe that guide language in order to express the need for all things to return to unity, and that they are united. These principles themselves are reformations of symbols and ideas that stem from the One. Love is the law –  the Law is the necessity of Love put forth through communication.
  3. WILL – language, to express the Law:  Language here is to mean the representation of all things as they are, including separation, no thing, contradictions, and that which is inconceivable by our minds. In order for language to exist, there must be an Other to comprehend. This Other is not “us,” per say, but our unconscious minds.

 
In the unconscious mind, this part is Symbolism – symbols have a language of their own, the language of WILL. This is the unknown factor of True Will we struggle to reason with and attempt to put into words. Will sometimes requires us to take “leaps of faith” – because we cannot yet understand the language of the Law, usually until after the “leap.” This discourse also gives rise to synchronicities of our being and the universe to help us strive ever to more.

 

Liber AL II:26. I am the secret Serpent coiled about to spring: in my coiling there is joy. If I lift my head, I and my Nuit are one. If I droop down mine head, and shoot forth venom, then is rapture of the earth, and I and the earth are one.
II:27. There is great danger in me; for who doth not understand these runes shall make a great miss. He shall fall into the pit called Because, and there he shall perish with the dogs of Reason.

 
The top half of the diagram is of the macrocosm/heaven, the bottom half being the microcosm/earth. The three parts of each half refer to the supernal triad Kether-Chokmah-Binah. I will leave the details of the sephiroth of the microprosopus/macroprosopus as they correspond to the rest of the diagram in another essay, but from above the Abyss lies the first emanation to be reflected into the next triad Tiphareth-Chesed-Geburah, and the Veil of Paroketh further reflecting down to Yesod-Netzach-Hod. That which is above is like that which is below.

 
When we begin the Great Work “in the interior of the earth,” we notice these mirrors more and more. We perceive reality mixed in with the contents of our subconscious minds. It takes mindfulness, and therefore internal reflection to realize the subtle differences. The conscious mind constantly constricts and allows aspects of reality based on what the subconscious desires. We train to separate the two in order to change.

 
In the microcosm, Love is under Will; Love is Self – the awareness of the processes in the triad. Law is Imagination – the reformation of ideas, and Will is Symbolism – the ideas themselves and the formation of them. It is commonly accepted that through Law “sprang four Rays or Emmanations,” these being Light, Life, Love, and Liberty which correspond to the points of the pentagram, powers of the sphinx, elements, kerubs, etc. These are examples of the “reformation of ideas,” as there were four rays and not none. “Rays,” “four,” “existence of,” etc. are all ideas residing in the unconscious mind, a reflection of the language that the universe uses to aid us in understanding it. Will is the vector which binds the properties of each ray so that they may be rays, and because that which is done for the sake of itself IS itself, the individual whom does his Will is his Will. Love is all matter; and all matter is the motion of light. It is literally everything and everywhere.

In summary,

 
DO WHAT THOU WILT SHALL BE THE WHOLE OF THE LAW – The individual must listen to the language of his unconscious mind expressed through symbolism, i.e. the Voice of the Silence. In order to listen to the Silence, he must train all his faculties to pick up, filter, rearrange, prioritize, transmute, and align the aspects of his mind with that of the universe.

 
LOVE IS THE LAW – The message/ends and the means/acts of communicating the message are one and the same. This is the creation cycle of the breath-in (compressing everything by dividing an area into parts and focusing both to a point) and breath-out (where their union releases their compression and they expand to the area from which they began.)

 
LOVE UNDER WILL – From awareness of unity comes the Will to unite. Love powers Will, and we become aware of unity when we listen to and follow Will.

Flux & Stillness

Concerning the dualities of:
I. All is flux; “One can never step into the same river twice.”
II. There is no flux; everything is stagnant; “Change is an illusion.”

“The circumstances of temporal physicality depend upon the mind which grasps it (and remembers it insofar as to reference it at a later time). Permanence is therefore only relevant to the perceiver so long as he can distinguish any such change; ‘the world is real’ can only mean that the world he remembers is always in some form consistent with the world he presently resides, and one may assume also, that he does not expect these circumstances of temporal physicality to change in the future.”

The nature of our consciousness (mind) records events and categorizes them in relation to its perception of time. Time itself is a measurement of change; and change being a measurement of time. Both conceptions are based upon subjective perception.
What we feel is “real” a.k.a. “permanent,” is also an illusion dependent upon our conceptions of “what hasn’t changed” according to our mental records (which make sense of life).

When we understand that all perceptions and conceptions reliant upon our consciousness/ontology itself are ultimately illusions, we arrive at point II;

“Case 29: Two monks were watching a flag flapping in the wind. One said to the other, ‘The flag is moving.’ The other replied, ‘The wind is moving.’ Huineng overheard this. He said, “Not the flag, not the wind; mind is moving.”

“Stillness” and “flux” are both categorized in the mind as “objective” and “subjective.” Even further so, “objective” and “subjective” become categorized in the mind as “no-mind” and “mind” which is why there seems to be confusion/contradiction. (Confusion/contradiction can only occur with a ‘mind’ to begin with!) ALL is “no-mind” AND “mind,” the key being that which is “no-mind” allows “mind” to bridge what is “only-conceivable/’objective” with what is “only-perceptible/’subjective.”

Therefore, I. (Flux) depends on the mind’s ability to distinguish events by the use of time, and II. (Stillness) depends upon the mind’s ability to un-distinguish events by overlapping particular conceptions of time. Ultimately, the distinguishing/un-distinguishing of events is fabricated by the mind itself.

“Change” is a concept we use to make sense of smaller, subjective scales of experience. “Stillness” is a concept we use to align ourselves with our conceptions of objectivity; the extremes of “change” occurring are both “stillness.”

[Stillness] – (inperceptible change).
Slow change + short duration of change. – (slow and boring change, to the point where you doubt anything is actually occuring).
Moderate change + moderate duration of change. – (when you can be sure something is changing).
Fast change + long duration of change. – (things are changing so much and over such a long period of time that the concept of “things” stop existing)
[Stillness] – (when there’s nothing except perceived change, you realize that by everything always being in flux, this in itself means nothing is happening to anything; “what” exactly is being changed if “it’s” always changing?)

THE BRANKS

Being is the Noun; Form is the adjective.
Matter is the Noun; Motion is the Verb.
Wherefore hath Being clothed itself with Form?
Wherefore hath Matter manifested itself in Motion?
Answer not, O silent one! For THERE is no “wherefore,” no “because.”
The name of THAT is not known; the Pronoun
interprets it, that is, misinterprets It.
Time and Space are adverbs.
Duality begat the Conjunction.
The Conditioned is Father of the Preposition.
The Article also marketh Division; but the Inter-
jection is the sound that endeth in Silence.
Destroy therefore the Eight Parts of Speech; the
Ninth is nigh unto Truth.
This must also be destroyed before thou enterest into Silence.

Sorrow & Creation

And now, a brief essay in four parts on the continuation of Sorrow through the vicarious curiosity of the Martian rover Curiosity, whom celebrates the most loneliest birthday in the galaxy every year by singing itself “Happy Birthday.”

  1. Why this is so sad: It is the ultimate metaphor for a being/creation abandoned by its god/creator. To make things worse, there are only a small number of these creations, all placed far apart from one another, and all there with a job from their creator. All they have is a job in a world full of loneliness. What a selfish god!
  2. Why this should not be sad: The creation is neither separate from the creator nor the materials of the creation. We, too all have a “job from our creators:” and this is True Will. True Will is also one with the creator and the materials of his creation. It is a cycle without sorrow so long as we are consciously part of creation/the creator/the materials of creation.
  3. Why is this so sad to me: I, being human, identify as a creation with needs due to having been given consciousness–Love. The rover, having been programmed to sing itself “Happy Birthday,” implies a cruel joke on behalf of the creator; whom created the rover with the need of an acknowledgement of its existence (through a birthday song) but then subjects the rover with no hope of true acknowledgement–hence it sings the song to itself.
  4. Why this should not be sad to me: The rover, whom was built with love and sent with love but is not conscious, Knows Nuit without separation. It lives eternally in Joy, having never been separated from it. It has within it, Hadit which is synonymous with the creator, and is an extension of the Will of the creator. Is the concept of this rover so different from the disenfranchised masses of people everyday who question their creator, not Understanding that they have never been separated?

29. For I am divided for love’s sake, for the chance of union.
30. This is the creation of the world, that the pain of division is as nothing, and the joy of dissolution all.
31. For these fools of men and their woes care not thou at all! They feel little; what is, is balanced by weak joys; but ye are my chosen ones.

We are conscious and because of our consciousness, we believe we are separate from the universe. This illusion of separation is what brings all suffering. The answer to the question of why we are conscious instead of being like the rover, is because we are both creation (of the universe and ourselves) and creator (of ourselves and the universe).

“The Man delights in uniting with the Woman; the Woman in parting with the Child.”

The “Child” is like the rover, the “Woman” is the scientist, and the “Man” is just the scientist before he reached his potential to become a scientist.

In other words, the creation delights in uniting with the creator; the creator in parting with a “new” creation. This “new” creation, as the cycle continues, seeks to unite with its creator, and so on and so forth.

Antepenultimately, “creation” is only a word for Change. Humans are the result of a change in the universe, and we grow up to change ourselves and the universe.

Penultimately, “change” is only the appearance of change. Forms change, but the substance remains.
 
Ultimately, “substance” is the totality of existence, which includes non-existence.

27. …O Nuit, continuous one of Heaven, let it be ever thus; that men speak not of Thee as One but as None; and let them speak not of thee at all, since thou art continuous!
28. None, breathed the light, faint & faery, of the stars, and two.

Attachment to Existence


We grow an attachment to our own sense of life, with it, our sense of self; the ego must exist for survival, but the metaphysics of the ego are only constructive for our sanity.

What is existence? Something that must relate cohesively to something else. Do ‘I’ exist? The I is the ego and it serves it’s functions, so yes – There can be no separation, i.e. to ask whether the ‘I’ exists without me, it cannot because it is a constant and crucial part to the concept of ‘me’ anyway. Words are defined with more words; hence a language exists but the words are the constructs and exist insofar as they contribute to language.

I went everywhere and nowhere and all along I just remained.

The Nature of Restriction

All existence is sin.

Chubby buddha Bo-Tei, is the physical manifestation of the tenet, “existence/life/being is suffering;” he is obese, “restricted” by his own physical form, under his own Will. 

But look how his existence/being is Joyous and smiling! “Rub his tummy for happiness,” they say. I say, touch upon thine own existence, feel its nature as Restriction; there is Joy to be Had in this!


The Key to Joy is in Sorrow itself; the mass accumulation of existential anxiety at the doorway to the Abyss, and then the grief, the relief, and the return of existential anxiety coupled with a fragmented sense of self–Who is even feeling this anxiety? The answer, No-One.
And how does one defeat the Mighty Lord Choronzon in a place where he reigns? The Thelemite maketh Love to him, because that is what Thelemites do. Love is the LAW; the Law from which shine Light, Life, Love and Liberty.

“Now Love is the enkindling in ecstasy of Two that will to become One. It is thus a Universal formula of High Magick. For see now how all things, being in sorrow caused by dividuality, must of necessity will Oneness as their medicine…. Let him also practice the art of the Analysis of Ideas, and that of refusing to allow the mind its natural reaction to them, pleasant or unpleasant, thus fixing himself in Simplicity and Indifference. These things being achieved in their ripe season, be it known to you that all ideas will have become equal to your apprehension, since each is simple and each indifferent; any one of them remaining in the mind at Will without stirring or striving, or tending to pass on to any other. But each idea will possess one special quality common to all: this, that no one of any of them is The Self, inasmuch as it is perceived by The Self as Something Opposite….”

The adept that accepts his own defeat, defeats Choronzon by giving himself to him; by Loving him. He achieves the Gate of Babalon–(Babalon is on just the other side, beckoning). Does not Choronzon seek to unite by subjugating True Will into his own Being? Is this not Love, also? If the adept pours his blood into Her graal, he becomes impregnated in Her. The sacrament of suffering. He becomes She. And in Her womb, is him. And it is an ecstasy in which there is no trace of pain.

THE OYSTER

The Brothers of A.’.A.’. are one with the Mother of the Child.
The Many is as adorable to the One as the One is to the Many.
This is the Love of These; creation-parturition is the Bliss of the
One; coition-dissolution is the Bliss of the Many.
The All, thus interwoven of These, is Bliss.
Naught is Bliss.
The Man delights in uniting with the Woman; the Woman in parting with the Child.
The Brothers of A.’.A.’. are Women; the Aspirants to A.’.A.’. are Men.

The Nature of Restriction:
Existence in itself is a Restriction (which we suffer by nature of consciousness as it arises);
Our actions below the Abyss are littered with Restrictions (first there are ego-wants, then there is the structure of Thelema itself, and lastly our HGA, if we are lucky);
We strip ourselves of ego-wants, we make good use of the Restriction called Thelema, and in the Abyss, Choronzon devours our HGA, along with whatever ego-wants we tried to hoard. — Choronzon cannot devour the Restriction called Thelema without also devouring himself. The Restriction called Thelema created him, but he does not dwell there; he IS a Restriction. He is capable of doing so, but only in the most dire cases; if Choronzon were to do so, we would end up begrudging Thelema and be lost in Daath, for it would seem better than to face Choronzon again; little would we know that we will never have to face Choronzon again, because he now IS us.

For the rest, we have Understood that the Restriction of Thelema is useful and beneficial, and continue with it. We grow up as our HGA within the womb of Babalon, as Babes.

Our ego grows back within us, and we Master it with all the lessons from the Spheres.

The nature of our Restriction called Existence is no longer perceived as a Restriction; we have aligned our Existence with Existence itself (Universal Will). The Infinite does not move; the illusion of our individual existences moving all in different directions only appear to do so because the nature of our consciousnesses have separated themselves from that which it has not yet recognized; itself in the ALL.

 This is why all Existence is Joy– these guided Restrictions lead one to the Wisdom of That, which is This; (just like the key to a cure is within the poison; the key to catharsis is within the suffering); and the key to Thelema itself is Nothingness/Ayin/131/Experiential knowledge–the Wisdom of That is the key to the Wisdom of This.

“Each star must calculate its own orbit. All is Will, and yet all is Necessity. To swerve is ultimately impossible; to seek to swerve is to suffer.”

Our actions above the Abyss are therefore [all Restrictions, including our existence] under Will (Joy!).
